In 2010, the GDi direct fuel injection unit debuted as part of the Gamma II line. This is a completely modern engine with an aluminum block, thin-walled cast-iron liners, a 16-valve cylinder head without hydraulic lifters, an injection pump driven by an exhaust camshaft, a timing chain drive and a proprietary Dual CVVT phase control system on two camshafts. There is also a plastic intake manifold with a VIS geometry change system.

In 2015, modifications of this unit for Euro 6 appeared, which, in comparison with engines for Euro 5, lost about 5 hp of power.

Disadvantages of the Hyundai G4FD engine

The most common problem here is the rapid formation of carbon deposits on the intake valves, naturally this is due to the presence of a direct fuel injection system in the engine. The engine loses a lot of power, starts to blunt, but decarbonization usually helps.
As with all engines of the Gamma family, there are often seizures in the cylinders. It’s all because of a weak catalyst, which is quickly destroyed by bad fuel, and its crumbs are drawn into the engine’s combustion chambers, where they leave scratches on the walls.
The cause of oil consumption in this engine can also be stuck piston rings, or maybe an ellipse of cylinders. There is an aluminum block with an open cooling jacket and thin-walled cast-iron liners that often warp at high runs.
Despite the fact that a very reliable bush-roller timing chain is installed here, there are quite often reports of its replacement at a mileage of 100 – 150 thousand kilometers. Keep in mind that there are cases of its jumping and the invariable meeting of valves and pistons.
Owners of cars with this engine often complain about oil leaks due to weak gaskets, floating revs after contamination of the throttle assembly, and also a small pump resource.
